On September 6, 2025, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) discontinued its temporary security detail for former Vice President Kamala Harris, a resident of Brentwood, Los Angeles, following significant public and internal criticism. This decision came shortly after President Donald Trump revoked Harris’s federal Secret Service protection on September 1, 2025, ending an 18-month extension that had been authorized by former President Joe Biden. The abrupt withdrawal of Secret Service coverage, which typically lasts six months for former vice presidents under federal law, prompted the LAPD and California Highway Patrol (CHP) to step in temporarily to ensure Harris’s safety. However, the LAPD’s involvement, which involved reassigning up to 14 officers from its elite Metropolitan Division away from crime suppression duties, sparked backlash from the Los Angeles Police Protective League and local residents. Critics argued that diverting police resources to protect a private citizen, albeit a high-profile one, was an inappropriate use of taxpayer funds, especially given Harris’s financial capacity to hire private security.
The cessation of LAPD protection has left a gap in Harris’s security arrangements, raising concerns among California officials about her safety amid heightened political tensions in the U.S. Harris, who served as Vice President from 2021 to 2025 and ran as the Democratic presidential nominee in 2024, remains a prominent and polarizing figure. Her upcoming multi-city book tour for her memoir, 107 Days, set to begin on September 24, 2025, heightens the urgency to establish a sustainable security plan. While a Secret Service threat assessment found no credible threats warranting extended federal protection, local leaders, including Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, have expressed unease about the decision to end her coverage, citing the polarized political climate. Bass described Trump’s move as an act of “political retaliation,” emphasizing the need to ensure Harris’s safety in Los Angeles.
California officials, including Governor Gavin Newsom, are now exploring alternative security options. The CHP, which had been assisting the LAPD, may continue to provide protection, though no formal confirmation has been issued. Sources indicate that Harris is likely to hire private security in the near future to address the gap, as the temporary state and local law enforcement support was intended as a short-term measure. The controversy has fueled broader discussions about the allocation of public resources for high-profile figures and the balance between public safety and political considerations. For now, California authorities remain focused on preventing any lapses in Harris’s security while navigating public sentiment and logistical challenges.
